The Swedish Government has legally authorized the burning of the Quran in the name of freedom of expression causing severe grievance among Muslims all over the world. A recent incident on June 28, where an Iraqi Immigrant in Sweden burned a copy of the Holy Quran in front of Stockholm on Eid ul Azha, caused outrage from Muslim countries and Muslims all over the world.

The reaction of Muslim countries all over the world was rapid and furious. Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq condemned this incident. The Moroccan Government called back their ambassador. Turkish foreign minister Hakin Fidan stated at a press conference that this recent incident is part of a disturbing pattern. Turkeys president Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey would not ratify Sweden’s application to join NATO until Quran burnings are stopped.

A range of protests have been observed in many Muslim countries all over the world. Protesters gathered outside the Swedish embassy in Baghdad; they were pushed back by security forces when protestors tried to enter the Swedish embassy. Pope Francis has condemned the Quran burning incident; he stated that he is angry and disgusted over this incident. He further said that all the holy books should be respected to show respect to those who believe in them.

Swedish Prime Minster also condemned the sad incident of the Quran burning and posted a tweet stating:

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental part of democracy. But what is legal is not necessarily appropriate. Burning books that are holy to many is a deeply disrespectful act.”

“I want to express my sympathy for all Muslims who are offended by what has happened in Stockholm today.”
