Somalia Launches National ID System with Support from NADRA. On Sunday, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre of Somalia officially inaugurated the Somali National Identification System (SNIDS) in collaboration with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has also been formed in this regard. This significant event took place in Mogadishu on International Identity Day and drew the participation of Somalia’s development partners, including Pakistan, the EU, the World Bank Group, the UK, the USA, Gulf countries, ID4Africa, diplomats, and UN agencies.
During his address, Prime Minister Barre expressed deep gratitude to his Pakistani counterpart and NADRA for their invaluable support in implementing SNIDS. He also commended their generous assistance in strengthening the capacity of Somalia’s National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
Distinguished figures like UN Special Representative for Somalia Catriona Laing and British Ambassador to Somalia Mike Nithavrianakis praised NADRA’s robust systems and congratulated the governments of Pakistan and Somalia on this successful achievement. This project is part of a multimillion-dollar grant provided by the government of Pakistan to Somalia, emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations.
The issuance of national IDs through SNIDS will empower NIRA and the Ministry of Interior in Somalia to fulfill their mandate of enhancing governance, security, and socioeconomic development. This will provide the citizens of Somalia with a secure and universally recognized form of identification.
President of Somalia Hassan M Sheikh also expressed profound gratitude to the government of Pakistan as he, alongside other dignitaries from the Somalian government, was enrolled for his national ID during the registration drive.
SNIDS is expected to streamline public service delivery, including social welfare programs, healthcare services, and electoral processes, ultimately leading to improved governance.
