Iran Invites IAEA Chief to Participate in Conference in May.
Iran’s nuclear chief announced on Wednesday that Tehran has extended an invitation to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, for a visit in May.
The UN agency, headquartered in Vienna, has faced challenges since 2021 in conducting inspections of Iran’s nuclear program, which continues to expand despite Tehran’s denial of any intention to build nuclear weapons.
In a recent interview with AFP, Grossi expressed frustration over Iran’s nuclear activities, describing Tehran’s cooperation as “unprecedentedly restricted.”
Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, informed reporters that Grossi has expressed a desire to visit Iran, with plans to attend an international conference on nuclear energy scheduled from May 6 to 8 in Isfahan.
Iran suspended compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal’s limitations on its nuclear activities a year after former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reimposed extensive sanctions.
While informal talks commenced with the United States, Iran slowed its uranium enrichment pace last year, viewed as a goodwill gesture. However, the IAEA reported a resumption of accelerated enrichment by Iran in late 2023.
Despite international concerns, Iran maintains that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes. In February, Iran announced the initiation of a new nuclear research reactor construction in Isfahan, following the revelation of plans for a nuclear power plant complex in the south.
