OIC Condemns Quran Desecration in Hague

The General Secretariat has reiterated the OIC’s stance, as articulated in the resolution passed during the 18th special session of the OIC’s Council of Foreign Ministers on July 31, 2023. During this session, dedicated to addressing repeated desecration incidents of the Holy Quran, the Council strongly condemned any efforts aimed at undermining the sanctity of the Holy Quran, other holy texts, and the core values and symbols of Islam and other religions. Such actions carried out under the pretext of freedom of expression are deemed contradictory to the principles outlined in Articles (19) and (20) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

This resolute condemnation by the OIC underscores its commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of religious symbols and upholding the principles of respect and tolerance among nations and cultures.

It is worth highlighting that there has been a troubling surge in incidents involving the burning and desecration of the Quran over the past several months.

In the previous month, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) voiced profound apprehension regarding the escalating wave of Islamophobia, particularly in Nordic countries, which has coincided with a notable increase in instances of Quran burning.

Prominent individuals, seemingly with the tacit approval of their respective governments, have, in recent weeks, engaged in acts of sacrilege against the holy Quran in both Sweden and Denmark. These actions have elicited strong condemnations from Muslim nations and sparked international outrage.
