In a groundbreaking collaborative effort, an international investigative journalism endeavor has shed light on the ownership of high-value properties in Dubai, exposing a web of connections involving political figures, individuals under global sanctions, suspected money launderers, and criminals.
How Many Pakistanis Own Properties In Dubai?
Among the identified owners, Pakistani individuals stand out, with their collective property holdings estimated at a staggering $11 billion. The investigation reveals that approximately 17,000 Pakistanis possess 23,000 properties in Dubai, constituting nearly 2.5 percent of the total $389 billion worth of properties in the region.
Names of Pakistani Property Owners in Dubai
Notable among the Pakistanis implicated in the property leaks are the offspring of President Asif Ali Zardari,
- Hussain Nawaz Sharif
- spouse of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi
- Sharjeel Memon and his family members
- Senator Faisal Vawda
- Four Members of the National Assembly (MNAs)
- and around half a dozen Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) from Sindh and Balochistan.
Furthermore, the list extends to encompass late Gen Pervez Musharraf, former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, over a dozen retired generals, a police chief, an ambassador, and a scientist.
These individuals were found to hold properties either directly or through their spouses and children.
How Many Indians Own Properties In Dubai?
Indians lead the roster with 29,700 individuals owning 35,000 properties in Dubai, with a combined worth of $17 billion. It’s important to note that properties registered under corporate entities and those situated in commercial zones are excluded from this list.
Exploring ‘Dubai Unlocked’ Project
Termed as ‘Dubai Unlocked’, this project harnesses extensive data encompassing hundreds of thousands of properties in Dubai, coupled with detailed information on their ownership or utilization. The dataset predominantly spans the years 2020 and 2022, excluding properties held under corporate entities and those located in commercial zones from the scrutiny.
Acquired by the Centre for Advanced Defence Studies (C4ADS), a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC, the data was subsequently disseminated to Norwegian financial publication E24 and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).
These entities spearheaded a comprehensive six-month investigation, engaging journalists from 74 media outlets across 58 nations.
The probe unearthed numerous individuals with criminal convictions, fugitives, and prominent political figures who recently acquired real estate in Dubai. Pakistani media outlets such as The News International and Dawn played integral roles as partners in this investigative endeavor.
