Under this project, led by the government and Malik Khuda Bakhsh, Convenor of the FPCCI Energy Standing Committee, electric vehicle adoption will be hastened, fuel imports decreased, and environmental pollution reduced.

A Game-Changing Collaboration

The agreement, signed at the headquarters of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Karachi, includes the installation of EV charging stations along the motorway from Peshawar to Karachi.

The initial investment of $90 million will establish the infrastructure, and in February 2025, an additional $250 million will be focused on EV manufacturing.

This is a critical moment for Pakistan as the shift to electric transportation promises not only environmental benefits but also significant savings in foreign exchange reserves.

PIDE’s Step for EV Adoption; Chinese Company to Build 3000 EV Charging Stations in Pakistan

The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) has strengthened these efforts by providing ambitious recommendations under the Future on Wheels framework.

Under the Future on Wheels, PIDE recommends that, by 2030, 10 percent of all new 4-wheelers and 25 percent of new 2/3-wheelers should be electric.

By 2040, these targets would rise to 50 percent and 75 percent, respectively. For this purpose, the framework outlines key policy recommendations:

  • Lowering Customs Duty: Decrease the import duties on the EV parts so the local production and exports could rise.
  • Increasing Exports: Ensure that by 2030, 10% EVs and 5% of all auto parts manufactured in Pakistan can be exported. Targeted will be to reach 50% export by 2040.
  • Encouragement of Joint Ventures: Motivate joint ventures among indigenous and foreign companies to offer technology transfer and investment.

By encouraging competition through foreign investment, imposing tough safety and environmental regulations, and incentivizing local innovation, Pakistan can bridge the gap between price and value in its auto market.

Coordinated initiatives such as the Chinese investment in EV charging stations could also spur wider improvements in infrastructure and consumer trust.
