As on previous norms, it is believed that this year the Schools Education Department will declare a two-week break in December so that students and staff would not face the severities of winter conditions in full.
In 2023, the provincial government initially declared a holiday from December 18 to December 31. However, the severe weather conditions, including dense fog and freezing temperatures, persisted, which therefore pushed holidays forward until January 9.
The mercury had fallen to around 7-8 degrees, meaning that commuting among students and attending classes was a hassle. The widespread calls were put forth among parents and teachers demanding that they be extended.
It is most likely that, for 2024, the government will follow the same schedule for its school-going students, which would close on December 21 (Saturday) and would reopen on January 1 (Wednesday).
This will, however depend on the discretion of the concerned authorities based on the weather conditions forecasted, along with public pressure.
The last year’s smog and cold waves exposed a child to extreme weather conditions that made the usual life hectic in Punjab, specially in Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranwala, where visibility on roads was reduced to few meters in the mornings. And parents are urging the authorities again to keep an eye on the weather and take appropriate measures for safety of students.
