Pakistan’s first LLM to be developed by Jazz-NUST-NITB
Pakistan Mobile Communications Limited, or Jazz, has developed the first local Large Language Model in Pakistan along with NUST and NITB.
As stated in the news release, this collaboration is a step forward toward indigenous AI development. Jazz, NUST, and NITB‘s competence is now going to be put together to develop an LLM that will arm the government, businesses, and individual masses at large with advanced AI-enabled tools specifically designed to fit our local context.

The collaboration will lay a solid foundation for building a language model that truly reflects the country’s diverse cultural and linguistic wealth.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of IT & Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said, “This is the landmark moment in the journey towards Pakistan’s digital future where we can use this partnership and advance AI in such a way that preserves our language and culture in front of the world.”
And so, by strengthening the might of academia, industry, and the government, not only can we build something representative for Pakistan but will position us at the vanguard in terms of emerging technologies.
Initiatives like this are crucial in safeguarding our sovereignty, advancing our global standing, and not forgetting our technological aspirations.
We will work at the governmental level towards establishing the necessary policies, resources, and frameworks over the years to make this initiative succeed.

This collaboration is a national cause that will drive exponential progress in digital inclusion. It will hopefully be possible for the first functional model to become available by end months as it sets a strong footing for a transformational AI framework in Pakistan.
NITB to Contribute: Pakistan’s first LLM to be developed by Jazz-NUST-NITB
This collaboration with Jazz and NITB forms a core enabler in setting the infrastructure and mindset required for AI adaptation across the nation. This initiative, by joint efforts, will lead towards setting up a future-proof framework for digital identities and an environment where technology serves the unique needs of our society.
This strategic initiative will be taken forward under the patronage of senior management officials from Jazz, NUST, and NITB, including Dr. Baber Majid Bhatti, CEO of NITB; Syed Ali Naseer, Chief Data & Strategy Officer at Jazz; Khalid Shehzad, Chief Technology Officer at Jazz; Dr. Rizwan Riaz, Pro-Rector NUST.
The MoU will run for five years, with the aim of developing the LLM and building an enduring partnership that is expected to continue innovation and collaboration.
