NEPRA Announces Increase in Electricity Prices for Pakistan

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has made a significant announcement impacting electricity bills across Pakistan.

On Thursday, NEPRA approved a Rs. 2.75 per unit increase in electricity prices. This decision comes in response to requests filed by XWDISCOS for periodic adjustments in the second quarter of the fiscal year 2023-24 (FY24).

Understanding the Impact on Your Bills:

It’s important to understand how this price hike will affect your electricity bills. Currently, consumers face two quarterly adjustments reflected in their monthly bills. These adjustments are set to expire at the end of March 2024:

  • 4th Quarter FY23 Adjustment: This adjustment has a uniform applicable rate of Rs. 3.28 per unit.
  • 1st Quarter FY24 Adjustment: This adjustment has a uniform applicable rate of Rs. 1.15 per unit.

Combined, these existing adjustments amount to Rs. 4.43 per unit. With their expiration in March 2024, NEPRA’s newly approved Rs. 2.75 per unit increase will take effect, applying to the second quarter of FY24 onwards (April 2024 onwards).

Who Will Be Affected?

It’s crucial to note that this price hike will impact most consumer categories. However, there’s a sigh of relief for those who qualify for lifeline electricity – they will be exempt from this increase.

What to Do Now?

While the official implementation begins in April 2024, it’s always wise to be proactive. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Review Your Electricity Consumption: Analyze your past electricity bills to understand your typical consumption patterns. Identifying areas for potential reduction can help you manage the impact of the price hike.
  • Explore Energy-Saving Measures: Consider implementing energy-saving practices at home, such as using LED lights, switching off appliances when not in use, and being mindful of air conditioner usage. Every bit of saved energy translates to lower electricity bills.
  • Stay Informed: NEPRA’s website and relevant news outlets are valuable resources for staying updated on electricity-related developments in Pakistan.

By understanding the new price structure and taking proactive steps, you can minimize the impact of this increase on your electricity bills.
