Pentagon: Advanced THAAD air defense system to be deployed to Israel
The Pentagon said on Sunday that it would send the advanced THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) air defense system to Israel and assign American soldiers to operate it as tensions in the region continue to escalate over a threat that Iran may attack the Jewish state in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on Iran’s forces in Syria.

U.S. Troops: Around 100 American troops will be assigned to operate the THAAD battery.
- Approval Defense Secretary: Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder identified Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin as the one who cleared the deployment, following a directive from President Joe Biden.
- THAAD System Capability: The THAAD system carries a range of 150-200 kilometers (93-124 miles). This gives wider defenses compared to the Patriot system. The element is made up of six launchers and 48 interceptors, along with highly technological equipment for radar. To man it, 95 personnel are needed.
