Sunni Ittehad Council Urged ECP for Reserved Seats.
The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has formally urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to designate reserved seats for women and minorities to their party, following the decision of independent candidates backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to join the SIC post-general elections.
Reports indicate that the party certificates of PTI-backed members who have aligned with SIC have been submitted to the ECP, with around 50 independent National Assembly members associated with PTI having done so.
Speaking to the media outside the ECP premises, SIC Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza emphasized that their collaboration with PTI spans six years, reiterating their commitment to safeguarding the people’s mandate. He mentioned the ongoing collection of affidavits from independent members notified of their electoral success on February 16, emphasizing their pursuit of reserved seats for women.
Meanwhile, PTI leader Barrister Gohar, in a press conference in Islamabad, asserted that PTI had secured 180 seats in the National Assembly, with independent candidates contesting the elections backed by PTI.
He affirmed that PTI had issued tickets to their candidates and supported winning independent candidates.
Gohar declared that after the issuance of notifications, independent candidates are mandated to join a party within three days, stating that PTI-backed independent members-elect of national and provincial assemblies would align with SIC.
He stressed the decision’s consensus nature and their intent to demand ECP allocation of reserved seats as per legal provisions.
During the general elections, PTI-backed independent candidates clinched significant victories, securing 92 seats in the National Assembly, 116 in the Punjab Assembly, 80 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 11 in Sindh.
