PTA has issued a statement explaining the cause of this slowdown and when it will be fixed.

Cause of Slowness:

PTA blames faults in two out of seven international submarine cables as the prime reason behind this slowdown in its statement:

  • Faulty Cable: SMW-4: This cable is at fault and its repair is likely to complete by the start of October 2024.
  • AAE-1: Fortunately, repairs for this submarine cable have already been finalized. This should bring some improvement in internet experience for Pakistani users.

Previous Statements and Updates:

The PTA, last week told the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that an increase in Virtual Private Network usage had overloaded the structure of the internet.

While VPNs may be one of several contributing factors to internet traffic, the recent cable faults indeed are the leading cause of this slowdown.

The estimated repair date announced by the PTA for one of the cables was August 27, 2024.

However, it has just been updated that there is also an issue with the SMW-4 cable, and hence this pushes the repair timeline for restoring internet speed to its full capacity.

What to Expect:

  • Partial Improvement: Internet speeds will rise gradually as the AAE-1 cable has been repaired, though only for some users, and this may not be felt right away.
  • Slowness Continues: Users are very likely to stay on slower-than-normal speeds during peak usage periods until the month of October due to damage to SMW-4 cable, which is expected to be restored in October.

How to Keep Updated:

PTA is likely to continue updating more news from time to time about the process going on for this repair. Users may remain updated for further official announcements or statements by PTA, particularly through the headlines of news.

Additional Tips:

  • Adjust Usage Patterns: Consider times when internet users are low, such as at night or off-peak, to perform bandwidth-intensive activities such as downloading huge files or watching videos in high-definition.
  • Contact your Internet Service Provider: In case you are still experiencing very low speeds, perhaps even after the said repair of the AAE-1 cable, do call your ISP to eliminate any local network problems on their part.

This involves being informed of the cause of the slowdown, the duration the repairs will take, and hence, enabling internet users in Pakistan to better their expectations and adjust accordingly.
