At PIMS, the number of new patients being diagnosed with breast cancer varies from 90 to 100 patients per month, as per assistant professor and consultant breast surgeon at PIMS Dr. Erum Najeeb in a session to spread awareness regarding breast cancer conducted in the hospital.

Dr. Najeeb explained that one of the prime reasons for death among females is cancer caused by breast.

Nearly 90,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Pakistan, and 40,000 die from it.

What is more worrisome is that the patients in Pakistan are getting younger and are presenting with an advanced stage of the disease,” she said.

As the chief organizer of Pink Fest 2024, Dr. Najeeb noted that the past decade has seen a great deal of progress at the tertiary care hospitals in Islamabad, particularly PIMS, which has seen the introduction of state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment through government support.

“Specialty-trained, foreign-qualified professionals have been brought on board. Thanks to these initiatives and robust awareness campaigns, there is a gradual shift toward earlier-stage presentations.

This allows patients to avoid disfiguring surgeries and receive less invasive treatments. PIMS handles over 1,500 cases of breast-related issues monthly in its Surgical OPD,” she added.
A report shows that more than 60% of women are now receiving diagnostic and treatment services within timelines in keeping with international standards.

This percentage is expected to improve with the establishment of a dedicated cancer hospital currently under development at PIMS.

This seminar event inaugurated by the PIMS Executive Director, Prof. Dr. Rana Imran Sikander was witnessed by the panellist discussion involving top clinicians Prof. Dr. Rakshanda Rashid, Prof. Dr. S.H. Waqar, Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed, Dr. Ayesha Isani, Dr. Humera Mahmood, and Dr. Ahmareen Khalid. In the meanwhile, members of Orthopedics Unit 2 participated by the leader, Dr. Asfandyar Khan, for the same purpose.

Survivors of breast cancers, besides others were allowed to share their life stories in that session empowering, healing, and hopeful.
