This pivotal move was made during a high-level meeting presided over by the Chief Minister herself, with a primary focus on revitalizing Punjab’s agricultural sector.
During the meeting, discussions revolved around a proposed legislation aimed at preventing the conversion of agricultural land for residential purposes, as well as the restructuring of key agricultural institutions such as the Punjab Seed Corporation and the Punjab Agricultural Research Board.
The highlight of the gathering was the approval of the ‘Nawaz Sharif Kisan Card’. This innovative initiative seeks to empower farmers by facilitating easy access to loans. A substantial amount of Rs150 billion is slated to be disbursed to 500,000 farmers within the span of a year, offering them vital financial assistance to procure high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Each farmer will be eligible to obtain an agricultural loan of up to Rs30,000 per acre.
Moreover, the Nawaz Sharif Kisan Card is not solely about financial support; it also encompasses various subsidies. Through this card, the government intends to provide a range of subsidies, further alleviating the financial burdens faced by farmers.
In collaboration with the private sector, the government plans to establish model agriculture centers across Punjab. These state-of-the-art facilities will be equipped with modern agricultural machinery and will conduct training programs for farmers. Additionally, they will serve as hubs for the distribution of pesticides, seeds, and demonstration plots.
In the initial phase, a model agriculture center will be set up in each district of the province. This initiative aims to safeguard farmers from the proliferation of counterfeit fertilizers and medicines, ensuring they have access to only high-quality agricultural inputs.
This comprehensive plan underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to revolutionize Punjab’s agricultural sector and uplift its farming community.
