A recent report from China, courtesy of leakster InstantDigital, suggests that Apple may not introduce the Pixel-like camera visor previously rumored for the iPhone 17 Pro. Instead, the device is expected to retain its signature triangular camera setup.

Contrasted with these are leaked iPhone 17 Pro Max images suggesting it would sport a horizontal camera layout, a design shift for Apple’s larger flagship model. However, it is being reported that neither of the devices will be sporting a prominent camera island and hence this is expected to be more streamlined.

Last month, rumors began circulating that the iPhone 17 Pro series might return to aluminum frames, but more recent rumors claim Apple will stick with titanium, as seen in the iPhone 15 Pro series.

Like all early leaks, these design rumors should be taken with a grain of salt until Apple provides official details, likely closer to the launch.
Still very early on in the iPhone 16 release cycle, but whispers and buzz for 2025’s iPhone 17 models have already begun to roll in.

2025 could bring one of the biggest updates to the iPhone’s design that we have seen since the 2017 iPhone X, with Apple rumored to be planning for an all-new iPhone 17 “slim” that has a much thinner design, a new display size, a different look for the camera, and more.

We expect four total models for 2025- iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new “Slim” or “Air” iPhone 17. The iPhone 17 Plus model is being discontinued, and Apple gets rid of the “Plus” lineup. The slim version of the iPhone 17 won’t replace the iPhone 17 Plus but will be making an appearance as a part of the lineup for this new device. At this point, rumors about exactly what we can expect from the new iPhone are mixed, but we can count on a thinner iPhone 17 with a display that’s around 6.6 inches. It has been likened to a MacBook Air, with the iPhone 17 Pro serving as the MacBook Pro in the analogy.

Since the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be carrying 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes, the iPhone 17 slim will fall right in between those two devices in terms of size. Apple might even expand the general size of the standard iPhone 17.

Although rumors say that the slimmer iPhone 17 will be the most expensive device in its line, even more costly than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, other rumors placed it as a device which is in between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro models. One rumor says it will have a narrower Dynamic Island and a centered camera, while another says it will include a single-lens rear camera and a standard Dynamic Island. Rumors should become clearer as 2025 approaches.

All of the four 2025 iPhones are likely to come equipped with the ProMotion display technology for a 120Hz max refresh rate, to provide silky smooth scrolling and video. By now, we have been hearing multiple rumors about this, so this is quite likely a change we might see. It’s rumored also that Apple will plan to have an anti-reflective display which is said to be more scratch-resistant compared to the existing Ceramic Shield.

On the camera side, Apple is rumored to be working on an updated 24-megapixel front-facing camera with a six-element lens, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max might also feature an upgraded 48-megapixel Telephoto camera, replacing the current 12-megapixel sensor.

At least one iPhone 17 model next year will receive an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip instead of one made by Broadcom.

Design: iPhone 17 Pro Max Design Leaked: First Details

iPhone 17 ‘Air’
Several rumors have circulated that Apple is working on a completely new version of the iPhone for 2025, and the device is expected to have a “significantly thinner” design than current iPhone models. Initial rumors suggested that this would be a replacement for the “Plus” iPhone, but some of the more recent rumors suggest it will be a new high-end device and more expensive than the current Pro Max iPhone, which starts at $1,199.

According to rumors, it’s still unknown how the “iPhone 17 Air” would exactly fit into the iPhone line-up. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo does not believe that the iPhone 17 Air would be costlier or more premium than the Pro versions, and an increase in price would make no sense after all the details that we have gathered regarding the product. There are several rumors and so we really do not know what to look forward to from the new iPhone. We know there will be a new iPhone in 2025 and it is going to be slim compared to other existing iPhones.

Feature of iPhone 17 Slim

Rumors have called it the “iPhone 17 Slim” or the “iPhone 17 Air,” but we still have no idea what the tech giant will name the new iPhone when it hits markets sometime in 2025. Both placeholder names play up the thinner, slimmer design of the device and sometimes is called an “iPhone Air.” With its M4 12.9-inch iPad Pro model, the company was able to reduce the thickness by more than one millimeter, making this a thinnest device yet the company has ever built. That same skinny design focus is expected on the iPhone in 2025, with the new phone being even thinner than currently produced iPhones.

The next iPhone is said to be a staggering two millimeters thinner than today’s iPhone 16 Pro, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The iPhone 16 Pro measures 8.25mm thick, so that would mean an iPhone 17 measuring at 2mm would put it at around 6.25mm thick. At 6.25mm, the iPhone 17 Air Air would be the thinnest iPhone ever produced by Apple. The thinnest iPhone we have seen yet was the iPhone 6, which measured in at 6.9mm. iPhones got thicker with the iPhone X and beyond as Apple increased thickness to provide more space for the battery, camera lenses, Face ID hardware, and more.

Analyst Jeff Pu has also stated that the new iPhone will be around 6mm thick, but The Information claims that it will be between 5mm and 6mm thick.

In terms of size, the iPhone 17 Air is likely to occupy a sweet spot between iPhone 17 Pro and the 17 Pro Max in terms of size. It has reportedly targeted 6.55, 6.6 inches, and 6.65 inches as Apple’s fixed display size to make the iPhone 17 Air somewhat smaller than the Pro Max iPhone 17 but somewhat larger than the 17 Pro.

The Information says the back camera of the device is going to be moved from the upper left side of the iPhone to the center of the device. The camera setup is described as a “large, centered camera bump” on the back of the device.

iPhone 17 Air will have smaller hole and pill-shaped hole to accommodate the front camera while making the Dynamic Island relatively slim, but according to one Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, this Dynamic Island will be identical in size to the dynamic Island of the present, yet he concurs that there will be a single lens to the rear camera.

Generic iPhone 17 Feature With Full Width Dynamic Island single camera

Analyst Jeff Pu also thinks the device is going to arrive with one-lens back camera by 48 MP, yet he has not written anything concerning a new spot for placing the camera lens.

Because it can’t hold a speaker on the lower edge, there should only be one on the top. Currently, two speakers – one on top and another at the bottom – adorn Apple’s current iPhones.

Kuo believes that the slimmer iPhone 17 will take on a titanium-aluminum frame, and Apple has gone with titanium but with a heavier aluminum content in the blend than in the current Pro iPhones. Apparently, internal specs will not be going to sell the new device because design will.

iPhone 17

Apple will sell the iPhone 17 Slim alongside a regular iPhone 17, an iPhone 17 Pro, and an iPhone 17 Pro Max, but there will not be an iPhone 17 Plus this year. It’s eliminating the “Plus” phone from the 2025 lineup due to weak sales.

Apple might add a new display size to the standard iPhone 17 in 2025. The iPhone 17 would be 6.3 inches, an increase from 6.1 inches. This would make the iPhone 17 the same size as the iPhone 16 Pro. Rumors suggest Apple will kill the Plus variant in 2025 so there could be just a single lower-cost device and, at 6.3 inches, it would fit between the size of the current 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus. That would give the display sizes at 6.3 inches, 6.6 inches (slim model), 6.3 inches (Pro) and 6.9 inches (Pro Max).

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

The Information reports that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will experience “major design changes.” Apple is said to scrap the titanium frame and revert to aluminum. Apple hasn’t used aluminum for a top-of-the-line iPhone since the stainless steel iPhone X was released in 2017.

iPhone 17 Pro Dual Tone Rectangle Feature 1

The iPhone 17 Pro models are said to carry an aluminum frame along with a half-aluminum half-glass backing instead of all glass at the back. Aluminum will be used in the top half of the back while the bottom half, still made of glass for retaining the functionality of wireless charging. A partial aluminum back can make the iPhone 17 Pro models more resistant to drops.

Apple is preparing for a bigger “rectangular” camera bump, which will be made from aluminum instead of glass. The camera bumps are currently square, so a rectangular camera bump would be a very significant design change. Supply chain leaks have supported The Information’s report on a camera design change. Leaks coming out of China say that the module is an “elongated oval shape,” rather than a rectangular shape.

However, rumors have also suggested that the iPhone 17 Pro is supposed to have a horizontal camera layout with the said elongated oval shape. Instant Digital however claims that this change would not be major. The iPhone 17 Pro models could have a new camera layout, but this is “still triangular,” not the said elongated oval shape.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max might feature a smaller Dynamic Island because of the application of a “metalens” for Face ID, which will consume less space and make room for a narrower build.

Display

Some upgrades are in the works for the display of the iPhone 17, as Apple is adding a new coating and is looking to bring Pro features to the standard models.

ProMotion and Always-On

The 120Hz “ProMotion” refresh rate has been limited to the Pro versions of the iPhone for several years, but in 2025, it could expand to the entire iPhone lineup. Rumors indicate that both the Pro and standard models will feature ProMotion support, and that will enable always-on functionality.

With all four iPhones to include ProMotion displays in 2025, ProMotion refresh rates will no longer be a feature that sets the Pro iPhone models apart.

All iPhone 17 models will come with low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels, which is what brings about ProMotion through their enhanced power efficiency. Always on allows always on time and widgets and notifications that for sometime now are exclusive only to the pro models of iPhone.

ProMotion enables refresh rates in a range between 1HZ to 120HZ. The 120HZ refresh at the highest refresh rate results in better scrollability as well as better video.

Tougher Coating

Rumors claim that the iPhone 17 lineup is to be offered with an anti-reflective display that would be more scratch-resistant compared to the Ceramic Shield employed in the current models of iPhone.

Apple plans for a “super-hard anti-reflective layer” which will be more resistant to wear and tear.

A-Series Chip

It sounds like iPhone 17 series won’t get TSMC’s next-generation 2-nanometer chips, but we are expecting A19 chip technology that’s likely built on an upgraded 3-nanometer process. Apple typically upgrades iPhones with faster and more efficient chip technology each year.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to feature an A19 Pro chip, while the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 slim could feature the standard A19 chip.

The TSMC mass production is said to take place at the end of 2024. So we’re looking forward to their N3P process because this will be the expected chip technology to be used on the iPhone 17 range. These N3P chips come out as more effective performance than previous versions with respect to 3nm chips in density transistors.

RAM

Higher end iPhone 17 variants would boast of 12GB RAM whereas the standard variant of the iPhone 17 is going to come with 8GB of RAM. 12GB RAM would be an increment of 4GB above the iPhone 15 Pro variants and 8GB of RAM will be an increment of 2GB above the standard variants of iPhone 15.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the the 12GB RAM upgrade will be limited to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, while the other models will feature 8GB RAM. Analyst Jeff Pu has suggested that the iPhone 17 slim will have 8GB RAM, and the iPhone 17 Pro models will have 12GB RAM.

Apple-Designed 5G Modem Chip

The iPhone 17 slim is expected to be one of the first iPhones to get an Apple-designed 5G modem, while the other iPhone 17 models will continue to use Qualcomm modems.

Apple’s modem chip will be capable of theoretical 5G download speeds of up to 4Gb/s, which is slower than Qualcomm’s modems in current phones. The chip will not support the fastest mmWave 5G, and will instead be limited to sub-6GHz 5G.

SIM Tray

Apple will eliminate the physical SIM slot on iPhones in more countries next year, though it is not yet clear which countries. Apple eliminated the SIM card tray in the United States with the iPhone 14 models, but a physical SIM has so far been present on iPhones sold outside of the United States.

It may be that only the iPhone 17 Air will not have a SIM tray because of the thin design of the device.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Chip

The iPhone 17 models will include an Apple-designed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 7 chip, replacing Broadcom components. The combined Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip is separate from the 5G chip Apple is going to use for the iPhone 17 Air.

Apple is targeting a wireless setup where the components are tightly integrated and more energy efficient, which will allow the company to cut down on the battery use of cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth technologies.

Battery

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max might have more removable batteries, using the same technology Apple first implemented in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. While iPhone 16 and 16 Plus use a special kind of adhesive that can be separated by a low-voltage electrical current, the 16 Pro and Pro Max stick with standard adhesive.

The following year could see new, easier adhesive on all models of iPhone 17s. This can make swapping the battery easier for users.

Camera

On all versions of the iPhone 17, there might be a front-facing camera with 24 megapixels and six-element lens – an increase over the selfie camera presently on iPhones at 12 megapixels. More megapixels capture more details and better images even when the cropping occurs.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max will have a 48-megapixel Wide camera, a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, and a 48-megapixel Tetraprism Telephoto camera. This will be the first time an iPhone will have three 48-megapixel cameras. The iPhone 17 slim is expected to have a single-lens 48-megapixel rear camera.

This least one iPhone 17 version next year will include an aperture that is mechanical allowing users to change the amount of light reaching the lens based on the size they are setting for the aperture for the iPhone 17, given that current iPhone models lack changing the aperture.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will retain the 5x Telephoto optical zoom lens, and it will remain a Pro-only feature. The standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Air will not feature the 5x zoom.

Pricing

The Wall Street Journal reports that the iPhone 17 Air will be priced more competitively than the iPhone 17 Pro models.

Pricing for the iPhone 17 Pro will start at $999.

iPhone 17 Release Date

The iPhone 17 models will be released in September 2025 and will come after the iPhone 16 models of 2024.

After the iPhone 17

The iPhone 18 Pro expected in 2026 might come with a variable aperture on the main rear camera, meaning the camera itself would control the amount of light that enters the lens. This would allow a variable aperture lens to better respond to varying lighting conditions and even offer greater depth of field control for sharper focus on subjects and smoother background blur.

The report that Apple is to launch the first foldable iPhone ever in 2026 or 2027 has ignited plenty of rumors on the air.
