Chinese Premier Li Qiang lands in Islamabad

Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, on a three-day official visit, landed in Islamabad on Sunday, marking the first time ever a Chinese premier has visited Pakistan in 11 years.

Li Qiang has arrived in Islamabad on the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and is scheduled to attend the 23rd meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Pakistan will host the 23rd session of Council of heads of government of Shanghai Cooperation Organization which falls on this Tuesday and Wednesday in Islamabad.

The meeting is expected to be graced by prime ministers and other top officials from SCO member states Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the First Vice President of Iran. India will be represented by the External Affairs Minister, and Li Qiang, the Premier of the State Council of China, will also attend.

According to media reports, a four-member delegation from India, 76 delegates from Russia, 15 officials from China, a two-member team from Iran, and a four-member delegation from Kyrgyzstan also reached Islamabad.

In addition to these delegations, seven delegates from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization also reached the capital.

He will be accompanied by ministers and other high-ranking officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Commerce, National Development and Reform Commission, and China International Development Cooperation Agency.

Some agreements are expected to be signed between the two countries during the visit, including a $2 billion loan for the construction of the Karakoram Highway.

The Chinese premier is also scheduled to perform a soft launching of the Gwadar International Airport.

Premier Li is arriving in Islamabad a day ahead of the commencement of the two-day meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a move seen by diplomatic sources as a message for those forces which had been trying to undermine China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Premier Shehbaz and Premier Li Qiang will lead their respective delegations to jointly deliberate all dimensions of relations between Pakistan and China, including economic and trade ties and cooperation under CPEC.

The SCO summit would discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the economy, trade, the environment, and socio-cultural linkages and review performance. The prime minister is scheduled to have crucial bilateral meetings with heads of delegations on the sidelines of the summit.

The SCO was established on June 15, 2001. It strengthened multilateral cooperation, brought about peace and security, and took upon itself a new international order on matters of economic importance.
