It was launched in collaboration with the National University of Science and Technology and comes at the needful moment for nearly two million citizens suffering from toxic air.

Anti Smog Measures

Lahore is one of the most polluted cities in the world that has been suffering from worsening air quality due to vehicle emissions, industrial activities, construction dust, and crop burning, especially during the harvesting season.

The consequences were dire with health crises requiring measures as extreme as school closures, business hours reduction, and even outdoor activity restrictions.

The Smog Clean Tower promises a ray of hope. It is designed to filter out harmful particulates, marking a significant step toward cleaner air. Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb described the initiative as “revolutionary,” suggesting that it could be a model for other cities.

While the tower is a badge of progress, experts maintain that there is a strict need for the enforcement of environmental laws. Even after the mandates under the Pakistan Environmental Act of 1997, very few industrial units monitor the emissions.

To maintain such improvements, technology must merge with strong regulatory frameworks to fight smog in Lahore.

Other Preventive Measures: Lahore Installs Smog Tower to Tackle Air Pollution

Citizens may take the following preventive measures against smog and improve air quality:

Minimize use of vehicles: Make a conscious effort to carpool, use public transport, or walk short distances to minimize emissions.

Plant trees: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and give out oxygen, thereby helping to improve air quality.

Maintain vehicle health: Service your vehicle regularly to ensure that it runs at its best, minimizing pollution.

Do not burn waste: Burning waste, especially plastic and rubber, is a major pollutant in the air.

Use air purifiers: Indoor air purifiers can filter out pollutants and improve indoor air quality.

Stay informed: Stay updated on air quality alerts and advisories issued by local authorities.

Taking these simple steps will contribute to improving air quality and reducing the impact of smog on their health and the environment.
