“People don’t understand how big of a change these record projects started for farmers in a few months-with no example in history,” Maryam insisted.

She said that farmers can call an agricultural helpline or visit the website and Facebook page concerned to avail this free tractor and land levellers scheme. Wheat farmers can also contact the extension office of the concerned department.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the “Kisan Card” initiative on October 28 in Hafizabad as a direct attempt to directly benefit the farmers by bypassing middlemen and ensuring that the actual recipient of benefits are the farmers themselves.

She said the scheme had been planned to be launched by the previous prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who remained abroad because of international commitments. Maryam told that the government is bound to formulate policies which could serve in increasing the interest of the farmer and reverse the consequences of wheat price increase.

“We were blamed for not buying wheat earlier but supporting profit making of farmers is always at the top of our priority list,” she said.

She also launched the “Green Tractor Scheme”, under which she claimed 1.5 million applications had already been received. It was meant to provide as much as Rs1 million in subsidies on tractors worth around Rs4 million.

The government also intended to start machinery hubs in every tehsil so that there will be adequate mechanized equipment available to the farmer at reasonable rates. Maryam disclosed plans to convert 7,000 tube wells operating on diesel and petrol to solar power. The idea is to reduce the electricity expense for the farmer.
