BYD’s passenger-car sales around the globe skyrocketed by 66% to 500,526 units for the month, surpassing Western competition such as Volkswagen, who are struggling to keep pace in the world’s biggest auto market.

How Did Sales Perform?

BYD has reported Q3 revenues at 201.1 billion yuan, or about $28.3 billion. That beats Tesla’s $25.2 billion for the same period.

These gains reflect the strong consumer incentives and subsidies in China, particularly in the final quarter when sales of EVs and hybrids are boosted by government policies.

BYD has experienced increased sales due to its plug-in hybrid models with 310,912 units delivered last month. Sales from purely electric vehicles account for the remaining units.

The rapid ascend of the company has sent shockwaves that China is to dominate the global auto industry.

This has put European and American manufacturers on the defensive.

The case for BYD’s foreign push is mixed despite success at home. Its overseas sales last October were about 31,200 units, with attempts at increasing brand visibility in Europe, including sponsorship of the European Championship.

With the growth of China’s EV market, BYD’s success exemplifies the country’s seriousness in leading clean energy transportation.
