ZURICH: The controversial Swiss ban on wearing face masks in public places widely known as the “burqa ban” will come into effect on Jan 1, said the government on Wednesday.

Burqa Banned in Switzerland

The measure, voted through by a narrow margin in a 2021 referendum in neutral Switzerland and denounced by Muslim associations, was initiated by the same far-right group that led a 2009 successful campaign to outlaw new minarets.

Governing Federal Council: Swiss Burqa Ban to be Effective from 2025

The governing Federal Council said in a statement that it had set the date for the beginning of the ban, and those who illegally violate it can be fined up to 1,000 Swiss francs ($1,144).

The ban will not apply on airplanes nor in diplomatic and consular premises; faces may also be covered in places of worship and other sacred sites, the government said.

Facial Coverings Not Allowed: Swiss Burqa Ban to be Effective from 2025

Facial coverings will still be permitted for reasons relating to health and safety; for native customs; or because of weather conditions, it said.

They would also be allowed on artistic and entertainment grounds and for advertising, it added.

If such coverings are necessary for private protection in exercising freedom of speech and assembly, they must also be permitted if the relevant authority has already condoned them and public order is not disturbed, it said.
