Provincial Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq formally inaugurated the Suthra Punjab Programme on Tuesday.

Speaking on the launching ceremony, the minister termed it a historic landmark. He said that the first cabinet decision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was to clean up Punjab. “It was a tough job because there was no systematic arrangement for keeping cities and villages clean,” he said.

Acknowledging the efforts of the secretary of Local Government, CEOs of waste management companies, commissioners, and deputy commissioners, the minister said that Punjab produces 60,000 tons of waste daily which much of it goes uncollected due to lack of machinery and resources.
In the first stage of the program, 110 out of Punjab’s 149 tehsils are outsourced for waste management, introducing house-to-house garbage collection and de-silting operations.
Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) will also be restructured, and each tehsil will have at least one safe dumping site.
The minister announced plans to generate energy from waste in the next phase. The program has already created 88,000 jobs, with more opportunities on the way. Besides, 25,000 vehicles and pieces of machinery have been procured for the initiative.
He added that Suthra Punjab would be a sustainable and technological model, with AI-based monitoring and control rooms at tehsil, district, and division levels. A mobile app will be provided to the citizens to lodge complaints.
A penalty system would be devised to redress the complaints which are not resolved, and there would be complete transparency and accountability.
He appealed to the public to cooperate with this citizen-friendly initiative to change the scenario of Punjab in terms of cleanliness.
