This nationwide initiative, known as the “non-filers SIM block campaign,” aims to encourage tax compliance by targeting individuals who have neglected their tax filing obligations.
Immediate Action Taken on Unregistered SIMs:
Effective immediately, the FBR has directed telecom companies to block the SIM cards of identified non-filers with taxable income.
This impactful measure aims to nudge these individuals toward fulfilling their tax responsibilities.
The block will remain in effect until May 15th, 2024, or until the non-filer takes the necessary steps to resolve the issue.
The FBR issued a formal notification outlining this directive, ensuring clear communication and swift implementation by telecom operators.
Targeting Non-Compliance: Who’s Affected?
This campaign specifically targets 506,671 individuals who fall under the following criteria:
- Non-filing of Tax Returns: These individuals have failed to file their income tax returns for the tax year 2023.
- Absence from Active Taxpayers List: Their names do not appear on the official list of active taxpayers maintained by the FBR.
Regaining Mobile Network Access: A Conditional Process
Unblocking a mobile SIM after an FBR-imposed block is not a straightforward process. Restoration requests require approval from either the FBR itself or the relevant Commissioner of Inland Revenue.
This ensures that individuals take concrete steps towards tax compliance before regaining mobile network access.
A Multi-Phased Approach: The Broader Strategy
Industry insiders reveal that the non-filers SIM block campaign is merely the first step in the FBR’s comprehensive plan to tackle tax evasion. The organization reportedly possesses data on over 2 million individuals who may face similar actions in subsequent phases of the campaign.
Beyond SIM Blocks: Expanding Enforcement Measures
The FBR’s arsenal against tax evasion extends beyond SIM blockage. The board also wields the authority to disconnect electricity connections of non-filers. This multi-pronged approach underscores the government’s firm commitment to promoting widespread tax compliance and strengthening Pakistan’s economic backbone.
