Ogra demands clarification from SSGC over geyser charges in gas bills

KARACHI: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has requested an explanation from the Sui Southern Gas Company regarding the charge termed geyser consumption in consumers’ gas bills.

In an official announcement, Ogra stated that it has written to SSGC and has sought its response in writing over the geyser-related sale along with associated installation charges. The Authority clarified that consumers are not bound to use SSGC’s contractors for geyser installation, and they can manage the installation independently.

The geysers, according to Ogra, it was a responsibility of the consumers to ensure an energy-efficient installation of geysers. But, on the other hand, gas companies do have rights to inspect geysers on consumers’ premises to ensure safety along with regulations compliance.

The SSGC recently began including charges of ‘conical baffles’ in its bills and issued additional charges of Rs2,085 under its geyser campaign.

Ogra said the deployment of conical baffles had been approved as safety measures with minimal gas usage. Regulatory authorities also requested consumers to present their complaints in the SSGC or before Ogra if they were made to pay for geysers they did not own.

OGRA Clarifies Conical Baffle Charges

In response to the growing public outcry, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) issued a statement clarifying the situation. OGRA confirmed that the installation of conical baffles in geysers has been approved to enhance safety and reduce gas consumption. However, the regulatory body also emphasized that consumers without geysers should not be charged for this component.

SSGC officials defended the conical baffle charges, stating that installations were conducted based on proper surveys. They explained that these surveys were carried out to ensure appropriate installations, and the charges were implemented after receiving regulatory approval from OGRA.

Seeking Resolution

For customers who have concerns or believe they have been wrongly charged, SSGC has urged them to visit their nearest Customer Facilitation Center (CFC) to lodge complaints and seek resolution.

The inclusion of conical baffle charges in gas bills has created a significant controversy. While SSGC and OGRA maintain that the charges are justified for safety and efficiency, affected consumers are demanding clarification and resolution. It remains to be seen how this issue will be resolved and whether the charges will be adjusted for those who have not benefited from the installation of conical baffles.

As winter approaches, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has added additional charges to gas bills under its geyser campaign. The charges relate to the installation of conical baffles in geysers, aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing gas consumption. However, this move has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among customers.
