The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), has imposed an outright ban on the sale and distribution of Famila Injection Batch 083, an abortion medicine, following complaints on its quality.

The “Recall Alert” was issued by DRAP, directing all pharmacies across the country to immediately stop sale of the batch.
It asked to return all available stock to Karachi-based Zafa Pharmaceutical Company, manufacturer of the said medicine.

It was decided when a Federal Drug Inspector in Karachi collected samples of Famila 150 mg injection for its testing. Central Drugs Laboratory declared Batch 083 sub-standard, Karachi.
Dr. RA Sami, DG DRAP, directed Zafa Pharmaceutical Company to withdraw all the injections of the aforementioned batch available in the local market forthwith and asked the Field Force of National Regulatory to augment the regulatory market surveillance activity in relation to the enforcement of prohibition order.
DRAP further warned that the use of Famila Injection Batch 083 would be suspended until further notice based on the information gathered, and its use by the healthcare providers and patients should be suspended pending further instructions on the basis of the available information. The safety of the patient is still at stake.
The pharmacies are instructed to return the existing stock of the said affected batch immediately to the manufacturer.
