Rawalpindi/Islamabad: Rawalpindi Ring Road Development is an upcoming highway planned to run across Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

It is around a 38 km long road that will connect GT Road, Islamabad Expressway, and M-2 Motorway.

It will start from Banth (N-5) near Rawat and ends at the M-2 Motorway Thallian Interchange after crossing Chakbeli, Adiala, and Chakri Road.

Former prime minister Mr. Imran Khan laid the foundation stone of the road in March 2022 at Thallian. The total cost of this mega project is Rs31.7 billion, from which Rs23 billion is for construction and Rs. 6.7 billion is for land acquisition.

The construction work on the Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) project has started again after a temporary halt due to the ongoing political and financial crisis and will be completed in one year.

The FWO was awarded the contract for Rawalpindi Ring Road, and it is being developed by Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) and Capital Development Authority (CDA). This massive project will have 6 flyovers, 10 overhead bridges, and 8 interchanges.

Here are the development updates about RRR:

Phase 1: The Foundation of Rawalpindi Ring Road

The first leg of the Rawalpindi Ring Road project stretches from Grand Truck (G.T) Road to the Motorway, covering a substantial 38 kilometers. Within this section, five pivotal interchanges are slated for development.

1. Baanth Interchange:
The journey begins at Baanth on G.T Road, approximately 5-6 kilometers from Rawat when heading towards Gujar Khan.

2. Chakbeli Road Interchange:
The road proceeds to Chakbeli Road, marking the location for the second interchange.

3. Khasala Interchange (Adyala Road):
Continuing on Adyala Road, an interchange is planned, situated right next to the General Block of Rudn Enclave and close to DHA Phase 4 River View South Block.

4. Chakri Interchange:
The path leads to Chakri, passing through Maira Shareef, where another interchange will be constructed.

5. Thalian Interchange (M-2 Motorway):
The journey concludes at Thalian Interchange, connecting with the M-2 Islamabad – Lahore Motorway, which is already in place.

Phase 2: Exploring New Horizons

Phase 2 of the Rawalpindi Ring Road is a work in progress, with route options currently under consideration:

• Option 1: A new road from Margalla Avenue, linking the New Islamabad International Airport to the M-1 Motorway.
• Option 2: Connecting the M-1 Islamabad – Peshawar Motorway with the M-2 Islamabad Motorway.

Potential Roadblock:

Despite progress, the project faces challenges. Recently, land records for layout in Tehsil Gujar Khan went missing, posing a potential setback. However, authorities are conducting surveys to determine the land acquired for the Rawalpindi Ring Road project, ensuring a path forward.

November 10th Update:

Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, conducted his third visit within 25 days to oversee the progress of the Rawalpindi Ring Road Project.

During the inspection, he focused on the earthwork at various locations, including Khalsa Khurd and Adiala Interchange.

Expressing the need for an accelerated pace, Naqvi directed authorities, including the Commissioner of Rawalpindi Division and FWO officials, to ensure the project’s swift completion.

Emphasizing its significance for Rawalpindi and Islamabad residents, he urged all-out efforts for its timely conclusion. During an aerial inspection of the 38 km route, Colonel Ayaz from FWO provided a detailed briefing.

The construction involves six lanes, with work initiated on the Banth and Chak Beli Interchanges.

The Chief Minister was assured that necessary drawings and land for the project had been provided, and construction, including subways and drainage channels, was in full swing. Present at the inspection were the Commissioner Rawalpindi Division, Regional Police Officer, City Police Officer, Deputy Commissioner, and FWO officials.
